I also have the same ticking and just recently my car stalls when warm and will not restart till some time later as well as minor smoke from engine bay only 106k miles on this car. Wolfson granted Mazda's motion to dismiss by tossing out most of the claims. I just read about this issue with certain Mazda engines; the timing chain can be too loose due to a bad tensioner and that causes it to rattle and rub against the valve cover. Have been told its related to the timing components. Enough ranting Mazda just needs to do the right thing and fix the problem or compensate owners. Oh, and it needs the ball joints replaced which are covered under a recall!! I have truly babied this car.
Now I am told the turbo is going. I called the dealership and their tech said basically the same thing they were saying about the vvt issues in earlier models. These cars should last well beyond that. The judge completely dismissed three claims and partially dismissed the warranty claims. I was quoted at a price of 5000 for a new engine.
I was driving in the middle lane and had to get to a shoulder fast to avoid an accident, but had no power!! At about 40thousand the power train module went transmission computer went was replaced under warranty. And they will not fix it. Mazda should be ashamed and forced to fix the problem. Now, just 35,000 later, the engine has failed again. Is there any place or way to fix this cheaper? The lock pin inside the actuator is defective so after time the actuator can no longer lock when needed. Didnt realize what was wrong with it until i started googling issues and came across thousand of other unhappy cx7 mazda owners with the same issues. This is caused by the lock pin of the variable valve timing actuator not fully engaging.
This car should have lasted many more years before having a problem of this magnitude. Save for two years to buy a used motor for it? Needless to say, I was unable to get a rental car yesterday as they were all closed by the time I got finished at the mechanic!!! I kept it serviced changing oil and filter every 10,000km and It started making a clicking noise whilst idling and accelerating so I got the worn pulley replaced followed by a new belt. The car started smoking from the tailpipe and under the hood! I asked to be transfered to someone who could have an answer and she flat out refused to help me in any way with it. Really after taking my money and giving me a shitty car? You can't bet the free shipping. What the heck am I supposed to do now? Can the timming chain make a brand new water pump break? The tech found other things wrong and one was the vvt timing.

The wiring harness to the intake camshaft position sensor may also develop a poor connection. Left untreated these problems can lead to oil leaks, stretched out timing chains, and catastrophic engine failure.
I got back in a few hours later and was doing some highway driving. Took it to my michanic and he said that the valves needed replaced along with the injecters. They told me everything was fine they looked at engine hooked up to machine it was fine. It has also sported a backup camera since its inception. That would go a long way towards keeping customers. So apparently I neglected the vehicle, not! Took it to dealership to get a recall repaired and i told them about the knocking under the hood, how my engine light stays on, my oil smells like its burning every time i change it or add more.
It turns out the timing chain stretched and took out all the valves in the engine. Only on cold start at that. It make a loud noise on startup for few seconds and then timing chain clicking noise whe idling and driving. It is a terrible thing when manufacturers do this to people, I put in 40 years of hard work before my heart failure, never screwed anyone over in my life, I anyone at Mazda reads this, come on by my place, I want shove this car somewhere so you can take it to work for some show and tell! A week later ratteling sound when starting car and now overheating and milky oil again. When I took it to the Dealer for the recall on the control arms they never mentioned the bad wheel bearing. It was almost paid for.

So they told me that they sent the recall letter about the vvt to the owner before me and they are sorry. So I brought the car to a dealership because of the lower arm control have a recall. .
I caused the engine to fail? I took it to my mechanic to get it checked out, and he said it passed with flying colors!! Thats without looking at it.
