She talked about the new album and her career in a recent telephone interview. When the kids were little I always wrote at night after they went to sleep. It was completely opposite of that. What first got you interested in writing songs? So every day I'm still amazed because I don't know how this job found me, but I'm lucky that it did. It probably doesn't happen to her because she's so big. The reason I started is because two of my older brothers wrote songs. . A lot of songs have been written in motel rooms.
McKenna parlayed her contribution to Hill's Fireflies into both an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show along with Hill, and a record deal with Warner Brothers Nashville. I get to do what I love every day and get to work it around my family, which is my first priority. That's seems right because you didn't even attempt playing out to you were 26 or 27, right? All the gossip that room could spit out about all the strangers that have come through. The love made, the promises, the lies, the turning points and last hopes, the prayers. I'm a night person but in the last few years I've tried to smack that out of myself because we have to get up at six to get the kids off to school. Mostly when I travel, I stay with friends. I pretty much schedule writing time now because it's just easier that way. What made you do that? McKenna released four critically-acclaimed independent album early in her career, but it wasn't until 2004 until she became the sought-after songwriter she is today. And I attribute it to the fact that by that time, I had already had three of my five kids and your kids give you everything you need in the department of being a loved human being on this planet. Did you set out with the goal of writing the songs around that theme? McKenna gained more attention in 2005, when Faith Hill recorded covers of four of McKenna's songs — three of which including the title track appeared on Hill's 2005 release Fireflies, the fourth as an exclusive to the iTunes Store. We stare into the trunks of our rental cars wondering what we can safely leave out there in the parking lot and how many instruments we can carry up the stairs without making two trips. The trouble is that we did all five songs in the first day. To be able to do that is great.
