I appreciate that it's not for everyone but seriously, if you watched this and felt insulted on behalf of people with mental illnesses you've really missed the point of the film. The effects were amazing and the actors were absolutely brilliant! The best comedies manage that. I am glad to say that I was Drop Dead Wrong! Not Mayall, not Fisher, nobody managed to come close to presenting themselves as someone who could act. Drop Dead Fred is a fun, goofy movie, and one that manages to sneak in a fairly serious theme as well. Well, firstly, it is not intended for children. Artisan doesn't seem to go to any real effort for all but their highest-profile catalog titles, and Drop Dead Fred is another in a series of uninspired, featureless full-frame releases. The New Statesman , Bottom and Guest House Paradiso are only the tip of the iceberg for his amazing career.
This movie was hilarious but it was more then just that. Some people perhaps read too much into the film when they see it as a study of schizophrenia etc, but then again you can't help think that underneath the zany comedy, the writers are subtly giving the film a deeper edge. Phoebe Cates, who plays Elizabeth, now has a whole new load of trouble on her hands. How utterly convenient to the story progression of this film. Phobe Cates is fantastic in this film.
Here's a little gem most everyone hated and totally misunderstood! Although, this could be seen as a pretty stereotypical plot point. The couple share joint custody of their two children. Though honestly, I saw this film when I was about 7 and it had no adverse effect on me, and I still enjoy it now, as an 18 year old. You probably already know the synopsis. The ending is really touching and I can never forget how when I was younger I always got upset by it. Fred helps Lizzy stand up for herself. The Children Act 1989 came into force on 14 October 1991, making radical changes in the law relating to children and their families.
Watch it, it will make you laugh, it will make you smile, and it will make you chuckle. And whilst the final goodbye between Elizabeth and Fred is pretty formulaic Hollywood, it still tugs at the old heart strings. Well if that isn't what you find funny, don't criticise the film, just don't watch films like this. Drop Dead Fred is a difficult film to review. This is arguably one of the most ludicrous ideas that I have ever read on the Internet Movie Database in my entire life, and believe me, I have read some jaw-droppingly moronic comments on this beloved site. When I was smaller, I had an imaginary friend who was probably the most wild thing that was ever in my life. Especially adults like me that wish they could go back to being a kid.
How could anyone create such filth? Those who love it have watched it many, many times. Imaginary friends do not move on to another child, imaginary friends are the property of those who imagine them. Those are the four items that truly make or break a film. I only wish i had an imaginary friend like Fred when I was small. Manic Mayall was born for this one role and he makes the most of it.
It's a carefree, fun ride that reminds us that all will not fall apart if everything isn't perfect. Isn't it funny how this film, whilst massively dismissed as rubbish by critics when it was first released, has attracted a very loyal following of people who hold it very dear to their hearts - isn't that basically the definition of a cult film? This adult was portrayed in Cate's mother to contrast with her character. The American writers of this comedy had to come to British independents for the finance, which ought to tell you something. Drop Dead Fred gave me maybe one or two chuckles at best. She plays the vulnerable young woman, who's been cowed by her mother and squashed by her husband, with realism and depth.
They try to incorporate slapstick into this film, and boy, do they get it so very, very wrong. It would seem her father simply abandoned them, which you simply wouldn't believe based on the sweet caring man they depict him to be. Anyone who says bad things about this movie has obviously never seen a fantasy movie before and taken it for what it is. The song was written by Jerry Reed credited under his birth name, Jerry Hubbard and Dick Feller. Furthermore, as a comedy, I was expecting to laugh countless times. If an imaginary friend is basically only good for throwing food in restaurants and messing up mummys house, what use is he to a grown-up? A lot of people did not understand this movie because they were searching in the shallow waters and never dove deep into the meaning of it.
Fred played by Rik Mayall was a marvelous decision and he ceased to be boring through out. There are so many genuinely funny and heart-warming scenes in this film. Acting Visual comedy is certainly not this films forte, but at least it tries. When I first started watching this movie, I didn't think it was going to be as funny as everyone was saying that it was. Elizabeth has left her cheating husband to move back in with her domineering mother. Elizabeth's not ill, she's lonely and she's the product of a really bad upbringing and the comments that sympathise with her mother scare me! Rik Mayall's manic energy is perhaps the movie's greatest benefit, as a whirlwind of a destructive force that still manages to remain sweet and charming. Because the films story arc is as flimsy as a bridge made out of silly string, there are numerous flashback sequences, some with more relevance than others.
There is no replacing or reenacting this type of movie and I give it a two thumbs up rating! A piece from the trailer uses a flashback to where Elizabeth and Fred decide to ruin a room with Cornflakes. And if you have seen it, and love it like I do and like all self-respecting human beings do , then go watch it again, and have some fun! An imaginary friend looks up women's skirts in two scenes. He also shows some really tender moments. He's an absolute gem, and I really wish we would see him in more mainstream movies so I could view his talent without video hunting. I won't rehash the plot you can read that on the main page , but the premise has a real interesting idea.
